Who we are and why we are here...
Nourishing Nosh founder, Lou Edney is an registered nutritionist, nutrition and wellbeing educator, and cooking teacher.
Since starting Nourishing Nosh in 2012, she has provided nutritional and culinary inspiration to thousands of Sydney siders. She is especially passionate about empowering children and teenagers with the skills and knowledge to navigate the food system more empowered than previous generations. Lou's approach to nutrition and culinary education is fun, practical and real. Louise offers small group hands on cooking classes and private nutrition consults in Seaforth, school and corporate cooking classes, Sydney wide and she speaks at schools to parents, teachers and students.
Lou lives on the Northern Beaches with her husband and furbaby, and her two human children when they need a nourishing home cooked meal.
Her approach to nutrition is practical, educational and fun! She has enjoyed cooking and eating her entire life and has joyfully turned hobby into career.
Lou's mission is to encourage people young and old to enjoy delicious, nutritious, conscious eating and the practise of cooking real food. "I want you to love spending time in the kitchen in meditative peace and creative chaos!"
Lou has a special interest in family and adolescent nutrition and helping people make peace with their plates.
She is serious about the provenance of food and advocates "voting with your food dollar" but she tries not to take it all too seriously. Open minded and completely approachable, Louise walks her talk and with 2 teenage daughters, understands the complexities of ensuring everyone eats to the best of their ability.
"It's important not to be too dictatorial about food or you can end up with disordered eating and find yourself in a whole world of pain. I've experienced this myself and see a lot of beautiful teenagers and 40+ year old women with disordered eating patterns. It can be quite debilitating and very stressful for those involved."
At Nourishing Nosh, they are passionate about real food and sensible nutrition. They have the education, experience and creative know how to help with all of your culinary endeavours from balancing your family's dietary health, to learning new cookery skills and creating divine dishes to catering for your party or event so you can relax and entertain your guests.
They believe that delicious, nutritious, conscious eating is for all occasions and that it is possible to eat on a more mindful level and meet nutritional & ethical needs without sacrificing taste & quality. (Don't be scared by that bold line - everything in moderation, including moderation.)
The philosophy behind the fabulous array of cooking classes and catering menus is delicious, nutritious, conscious eating. They want the food eaten by people to be loved by the people. They want this same food to nourish your bodies and minds and want you to be conscious about what, when and how you eat. That does not mean that you have to eat 100% nutrient dense biodynamic produce 24/7. In fact it's probably healthier in the long run to relax every now and again.
Taking food too seriously can become a chore and the enjoyment of sharing a simple meal with friends can become a minefield of dos and don'ts. Eating consciously is like meditating, you need to keep recentering and eat what makes you feel vibrant and energetic most of the time. BUT don't beat yourself up if a night out on the town tempts you to steer off course or God forbid eat a piece of chicken (of unknown origin). There is a fine balance and your sanity, at the end of the day, needs to reign.
Nourishing Nosh hosts a variety of traditional & contemporary cooking classes for the general public, companies and schools.
Some classes are just plain fun and introduce you to the exotic cuisines of Cambodia, Laos, Vitenam, the Mediterranean and the Middle East. They are all nutritious and delicious and there is always discussion.
Other classes focus on fermented foods, vegetarian meals, gluten or dairy free cooking, healthy mid week meals or lunch boxes for kids.
Workshop style classes incorporate nutrition talks and tips and teach you how to prepare your grains and legumes, make fermented foods & breads.
In all classes, the consumption of real food is advocated including lots of fresh veggies, fruit, grass fed meat and wild fish, organic eggs and chicken, full cream dairy, nuts and seeds and some whole grains and legumes. We like the long population based studies that point to better health and longevity when a balanced real food diet is eaten.
